A Theoretical Comparative Study Between Open Cell Foam and Conventional Packed Bed in Externally Cooled Multitubular Fixed-Bed Reactors for the C1 Chemistry

The open cell foams are likely to be the next generation of catalyst supports due to their interesting specific properties (large exchange area, easy control of external porosity, etc.). In multitubular packed-bed reactors used for the C1 chemistry which constitute the focus of this work, it is well known that the removal of the reaction heat and the pressure drop are the most critical aspects for planning and designing chemical engineering processes. In this context, the objective of the present work is to compare the ‘conventional’ SiC spherical particles bed and SiC open cell foam bed for the C1 chemistry. From simulations, this work allows observing and quantifying the influences of the fluid velocity and the type of catalyst used (foam or packed bed) on the properties of transport. The observed responses are the total effective thermal conductivity and the pressure drop. The results indicate that it will be necessary to tune the void fraction and morphological parameters of the open cell foam in order to obtain the best compromise between pressure drop and a good thermal behavior.

An observer design for a class of implicit systems

This paper deals with the problem of observer design for a class of implicit nonlinear systems of index one. To solve this problem, an implicit observer which is given by an implicit system is usually used. The implementation of this kind of observer requires an optimization algorithm to solve at each time the algebraic constraints. Alternatively, an explicit observer which is described by an ordinary differential equation can be used. The advantage of this approach is that no optimization algorithm is required. Moreover the observer initialization may be done outside the constraints. In this paper it is shown that, under some conditions, the existence of an implicit observer implies the existence of an explicit one. Then, an explicit observer is given for implicit state affine systems whose dynamic involves an additional nonlinear term depending on the input, the output and the implicit variable.

Forwarding Design with Prescribed Local Behavior

Among the non-linear control techniques, some Lyapunov design methods (Forwarding / Backstepping) take advantage of the structure of the system (Feedforward-form / Feedback-form) to formulate a continuous control law which stabilizes globally and asymptotically the equilibrium. Global Asymptotic Stabilization for a Class of Bilinear Systems by Hybrid Output Feedback

This technical note deals with the global asymptotic stabilization problem for a class of bilinear systems. A state feedback controller solving this problem is obtained uniting a local controller, having an interesting behavior in a neighborhood of the origin, and a constant controller valid outside this neighborhood. The approach developed is based on the use of a hybrid loop, and more precisely a hybrid state feedback. This result is extended to the case where the state of the plant is not fully available and only the measured output can be used for control purposes. In this case, a dynamical controller constituted by an observer and a state feedback is built by means of hybrid output feedback framework. In both cases, the conditions are expressed by a set of linear matrix inequalities.

Local observer for infinitesimally observable nonlinear systems

In this article, we present a local observer based on infinitesimal observability along trajectories. The gain of this observer derives from a dynamical Lyapunov equation. The inputs for which the observer converges are those which render the system observable at each point of the Ω-limit of the unknown trajectory (infinitesimal observability at infinity along trajectories). The performance of the proposed observer is illustrated with an application to DC machine.

New Sequence Spaces and Function Spaces on Interval

We study the sequence spaces and the spaces of functions defined on interval in this paper. By a new summation method of sequences, we find out some new sequence spaces that are interpolating into spaces between and and function spaces that are interpolating into the spaces between the polynomial space and . We prove that these spaces of sequences and functions are Banach spaces.

Novel inductively-heated catalytic system for fast VOCs abatement, application to IPA in air

Abstract
Pt-Al2O3, Al2O3 and SnO2 were deposited as thin films on a stainless steel support that was inserted into an annular reactor and heated using an electromagnetic induction device. Possibility of an accurate temperature control was demonstrated and heating rates up to 800 °C min−1 were obtained. Total abatement of 1000 ppm isopropyl alcohol (IPA) was achieved at low temperature (T50 about 80 °C) on 1 wt% Pt/Al2O3. Nevertheless, the strong IPA adsorption on the alumina support and the formation of large amounts of acetone dictated to select the other catalyst, SnO2. IPA 90% conversion into CO2 and H2O was then obtained at 250 °C with a total flow of 100 NmL min−1 containing 1000 ppm IPA. Considering the volume of the very thin reactive sheath (hydraulic diameter about 3.6 mm), ghsv was as high as 2.6 × 103 h−1. Total abatement to CO2 and H2O of high amounts of IPA (about 1 vol%) in air was achieved in less than 30 s and near-room temperature was recovered quickly when the contaminant level at the reactor inlet felled again below a given threshold

Observer Design for Uniformly Observable Systems With Sampled Measurements

This work considers the problem of observer design for continuous-time systems with sampled output measurements (continuous-discrete time systems). In classical literature and in many applications, the continuous-discrete time extended Kalman filter (EKF) is used in order to tackle this problem. In this work, using a normal form characterizing the class of nonlinear uniformly observable single output nonlinear systems, it is shown that a particular stationary solution of a continuous discrete time Lyapunov equation can be used in order to design a constant high gain observer. Explicit conditions are given to ensure global convergence of the observer. Finally, an illustration of this result is given using an example of a biological process.

On the characterization of the Duhem hysteresis operator with clockwise input–output dynamics

In this paper we investigate the dissipativity property of a certain class of Duhem hysteresis operator, which has clockwise (CW) input–output (I/O) behavior. In particular, we provide sufficient conditions on the Duhem operator such that it is CW and propose an explicit construction of the corresponding function satisfying dissipation inequality of CW systems. The result is used to analyze the stability of a second order system with hysteretic friction which is described by a Dahl model.

Relaxed and Hybridized Backstepping

In the present work, we consider nonlinear control systems for which there exist structural obstacles to the design of classical continuous backstepping feedback laws. We conceive feedback laws such that the origin of the closed-loop system is not globally asymptotically stable but a suitable attractor (strictly containing the origin) is practically asymptotically stable. A design method is suggested to build a hybrid feedback law combining a backstepping controller with a locally stabilizing controller. A constructive approach is also suggested employing a differential inclusion representation of the nonlinear dynamics. The results are illustrated for a nonlinear system which, due to its structure, does not have a priori any globally stabilizing backstepping controller.

Sensor fault detection and isolation filter for polytopic LPV systems: A winding machine application

Abstract
In this paper, a fault diagnosis method is developed for a particular class of nonlinear systems described by a polytopic linear parameter varying (LPV) formulation. The main contribution consists in the synthesis of an accurate fault detection and isolation (FDI) filter and also a sensor fault magnitude estimation with a quality factor. This quality factor of the filter underlines if the fault estimation can be used or not. Stability conditions of the polytopic LPV filter are studied by ensuring poly-quadratic stability with Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) representation. The effectiveness of this global FDI scheme through LPV modelization, filter design and stability analysis, is illustrated on a real winding machine under multiple sensor faults.
